About Kruger to Canyon Biosphere Reserve

The Kruger to Canyon Biosphere Reserve is a transboundary conservation area covering approximately 2.5 million hectares stretching from South Africa’s renowned Kruger National Park in Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces to the Lebombo Mountains extending into Gaza Province, Mozambique. This extensive reserve links protected wilderness, river systems, and rural communities, fostering biodiversity conservation alongside sustainable natural resource management. It holds one of South Africa’s richest concentrations of wildlife, including the Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros—along with endangered species like the African wild dog and pangolin. The reserve features diverse habitats including savanna woodlands, riverine forests, granite and basalt rock formations, and the prominent Blyde River Canyon, one of the largest canyons in the world.

Recreational opportunities abound within the biosphere, from guided game drives and bird watching in Kruger National Park to hiking along trails overlooking breathtaking vista points in Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve. The area supports cultural tourism through local villages that offer insight into traditional livelihoods and crafts. The biosphere is also known for its extensive river systems such as the Olifants and Crocodile Rivers, supporting rich aquatic biodiversity and creating fertile ground for fishing and canoeing activities.

Visitors are drawn by the mix of pristine wilderness, dramatic landscapes, and cultural heritage with access facilitated via major roads connecting towns like Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa. Conservation efforts here emphasize protecting natural resources while encouraging community involvement and ecotourism. This biosphere reserve is a premier destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking immersive wildlife experiences in Southern Africa’s wild heart.
